The Tradition of Gift Giving

During the Christmas season of 1931, families came together to exchange thoughtful presents, fostering cherished memories that would last for years. The act of giving gifts was an important part of the holiday, reflecting the spirit of generosity and togetherness that defined Christmas celebrations during this era.

Popular Gifts of the Era

Among the most popular gifts were handmade crafts, toys, and books. These items not only brought joy to their recipients but also highlighted the care and effort put into each present. Practical gifts were also highly valued, with families often choosing items that could be used throughout the year, such as warm clothing, kitchen gadgets, and underwear. These practical choices reflected the economic realities of the time while still carrying meaningful intentions.

Undergarments as Christmas Gifts

Advertisements from 1931, such as those found in McCall’s, featured underwear and undergarments for women as ideal Christmas gifts. The ads described these items as “adorable new Munsingwear Modes,” made from specially processed Munsingwear Rayon and sleek, caressing Tricot, emphasizing their appeal as perfect holiday presents. The design of undergarments evolved during this period, with bras and bandeaus transitioning from styles that flattened the chest in the early Model A years to more flattering, uplifted styles by late 1929. Bloomers also changed from straight lines to more tailored shapes as outer garments developed a true waistline. All these items would have been judged in Coordinated Apparel.

A Timeless Holiday Choice

Despite the passage of time, some traditions remain unchanged—underwear continues to be a classic choice for Christmas gifts, just as it was in 1931.
