Tech Q & A for February, 2025

Q: I have a seven tooth steering box in my 1929 Ford model A can they be rebuilt and who would you recommend to do the rebuilding ?Are there adjustments on the steering box?
Thank you,
Sal
A: Hi Sal,
The 7 tooth isn’t adjustable like the 2-tooth.  They can be rebuilt.  I’d suggest asking around your local club for someone who has done it.  If all else fails, some of the Model A vendors (like Snyder’s and Bert’s Model A Center) do offer a rebuild service on an exchange basis where you send them your unit and they send you a rebuilt one and charge a fee.

Q: I need to replace the cam gear in my 1929 Model A. Just wondering which gear is the best for a replacement? It has a fiber one in it now that’s coming apart.
Thank you, Skinz

A: Ask 10 people and you’ll get 10 answers.  I prefer the original fiber gears.  If installed correctly, they’ll last longer than we will.

The aluminum ones will also last a long time, but users say they’re a bit noisy.

Q:  I have more recently been able to take my model A on short drives but noticed that when coming to a stop or sometimes going to down shift from 3rd gear the car dies. I’m not sure if this is normal and I’m driving the car wrong?
– Ethan

A: I’ve rebuilt several carburetors, and a couple of them behaved just like yours – dies when coming to a stop.

I’ve isolated my problems to the idle jet and the secondary well.
Check yours to make sure the passages are open and are the right size.  I’ve attached a jet table for your reference.
You’ll need some tiny drills to check those openings; maybe one of your friends has a set or you can buy them from most Model A parts suppliers.
