Q: Hello! I am in South Africa and have a 1928 Standard Roadster. I watched the video where you installed a Mitchell synchronized transmission for the Model A. I believe this gearbox makes the shifting of the gears easier to change and to gear down as well! As the car is, my wife is not able to drive it. What I want to know is the following:
- If I install this gear box, will it be easier to change the gears while driving, especially for my wife?
- Please advise me and give me the best gear ratio for this gear box. Mitchell Manufacturing requires that information.
- Does the Mitchell gear box come with transmission oil seal in the bell house as a standard?
- Does the gear box come with the tower exchange gear and the gear shift lever or must I specify?
- Does this gear box use the same oil w600?
- How long did you wait for your gear box to delivered to you.
A: Hello, Santos!! Such a pleasure to communicate with you! OK, here are my opinions:
1: Yes.
2: My favorite is what Mitchell is now calling “Paul Shinn spec”, which is the stock 1st and Reverse gears, and a 15% higher second gear.
3: That comes with it.
4: Yes. You just need to specify the year of your Model A. Since yours is a 1928, Mitchell needs to know if you have the early type hand brake lever (directly in front of the shift lever) or the later one (to the side of the shift lever).
5: No. The synchronized transmissions use 75/140 lube (available at most auto parts stores worldwide) with GL-5 rating.
6: I think Mitchell’s lag time right now is around 5 months.
